A Brief Hello

My schedule has been busy between church, appointments, and writing my notes for the luncheon the last few days.  I thought I'd just write a quick note and say hello.

There probably won't be a Chat Pack question tomorrow because I'm just not ready.  If something crazy happens tomorrow, like several hours just open up wide for me to work on it, then I could do it.  I'm not counting on it, though.

I'm excited and anxious and nervous for Saturday.  Yeah, all those things.  Keeping busy on Friday is probably bound to be a good thing for me.  That and prayer.  (I know.  I know.  Philippians 4:6).

Be back soon.

Kitty's Okay?

I apologize up front for what I'm about to share if you don't like blogs about pets.  I just want to share this one thing about our cat Bailey.  He's a 12-year-old tabby, and he was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in February.  He was tossing his kitty kibble a lot and losing weight.

He was put on medicine that has to be given twice a day for the rest of his life, but we didn't believe it was doing the job for him.  He's been tossing his kitty kibble at least 3 times a day within an hour of each episode, and typically even once in the middle of the night every night.

We began to believe that his days were probably numbered, and we were going to call the vet back to see if his time was up.

Rich did a check on the internet, though, and read that the medicine we give him is very bitter and really should be administered with some food or milk.  He started crushing it into milk, and Bailey drinks it up easily.

Guess what!  No kitty kibble tossing for 2 days straight!!!  You have no idea what a true feat that is in our house.  The little guy seems to even have perked up, too.  I can't imagine what all the wretching day after day would do to a cat's stomach muscles.  No wonder he seems to be in a better mood.

I just had to share that little bit of praise coming from our home.

Memory Monday - 2 Corinthians 4:17-18

Memory Monday I came across a verse this morning in my quiet time that struck a chord with me.  It's in a passage that I'm familiar with, both having been counseled by it and counseling other people with it.

The reason it really hit me today is because it deals with affliction and looking beyond my temporary circumstances.  I've been afflicted for some time in a particularly hard circumstance, as well as some other various circumstances in my relationships and church ministry.

Affliction hurts, and it doesn't feel light.  But the apostle Paul calls affliction "light" when viewed through eternity.  He exhorts us to look ahead to the future glory and not focus on these temporary circumstances because they are just that.  Temporary.  That's hard.

I need God to renew my mind with the truth of His Word, so I guess that's why I'm choosing these scriptures to memorize this week.  In all honesty, I'd rather memorize something else...something easier to soak up.  But I need this.

For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal. ~ 2 Corinthians 4:17-18

Preparing To Speak

One week from today (Saturday) I will be speaking on the topic of gratitude at a ladies luncheon at my church.  I've known for more than a month that I would be doing it, and all sorts of thoughts have run through my head in anticipation of the event.  My feelings have run the gamut.

Fear. Inadequacy. Confidence. Uncertainty. Worry. Humility.

I've been jotting things down for weeks that I might include in my notes.  The other night I started making the basic outline and then began to fill it in with points and scriptures.  I was surprised at how quickly the thoughts came, but I guess I shouldn't be, since I've been focused on the topic and gratitude scriptures since January when I read Nancy Leigh DeMoss' book.

I'm still in process of studying and writing, so if you think of me this week, would you pray for me?  I've had experience teaching ladies Bible studies and children's lessons, but this still seems different.  It will definitely be the largest group I've ever spoken to.

Have a good weekend,

Chat Pack (It's a Vlog)

chat-symbolsFriday?  Did I hear someone say it's Friday?  Woo...hooooo!!!!  The weekend's here!

I guess that means I'll be answering another Chat Pack question today.  I wonder what the question is?

Better click the play button to find out.  It's only 3 minutes and 14 seconds of your life you won't get back.  And ya never know.  I might just sing a rendition of Weekend in New England, and you surely wouldn't want to miss that.

Okay... show of hands... who clicked play to see if I would sing Weekend in New England?  You can fess up in the comments below.

Have a great Friday!

Woes of a Half-Hearted Cook

If truth be known, I'd prefer ordering out for dinner every night.  I just don't enjoy cooking.  I tolerate it.  That's not to say that I haven't had some good cooking nights and made some delicious meals.  I have.  The prep and the planning is what gets to me.  And the clean-up.

And then there's nights like this....

A couple days ago I had finished lunch and started baking a loaf of bread in my bread machine.  You can be proud of me because I needed white bread for a recipe on my menu plan later in the week, and making this loaf was putting me ahead of the game.

It was about 1:00, and the thought of dinner came to mind.  I decided to check my menu plan to see what was on the schedule.  It was a crock pot meal that needed to cook on low about 4 hours.

Seeing how it was 1:00 and we eat at 5:00, I decided I better get the food going in the crock pot.  I threw in the ingredients, mixed them up, added the chicken breast tenders and set the crock pot on low.  Done!  All I needed to do after that was cook up some brown rice to serve it with.

Later at 4:30 I remembered I needed to start my rice on the stove.  I went into the kitchen and lifted the lid on my crock pot because I knew it would probably need a stir.

Wait a sec!  The chicken was raw.  Really?!?  The chicken was raw?!?  How could that...?  OOOOHH NOOOO!!!

It was at that moment I remembered something.  Shortly after getting my crock pot set up, I decided my cell phone needed to be charged.  I unplugged my can opener, so I could use the outlet for my charger.  Only I didn't unplug the can opener.  I unplugged the crock pot.

Um.  Yeah.  I'm just distracted like that.

So you can see how ordering out for dinner every night would really be to our advantage.  Thank goodness, I was able to whip up a whole other meal that didn't take too much prep.  I can't say I didn't grumble some about having to make TWO dinners in a day, though.

Yeah... I can't say that cooking is really my thing.

A Very Random Random Dozen

                                       random dozen

It's Wednesday and another session with Linda and her Random Dozen.  Does anyone see the irony in the fact that I have to display this picture of donuts on my blog every time I do this meme?  Oh, Lid, if you only knew...

1. Ever had any run-ins with the "library police?"

I never had a librarian come after me, but I did have one get a little stern with me once.  Many years ago my record showed that I had 2 books that had been overdue for something like a year.  What didn't make sense was that they were books from the children's department.  Something about science experiments, if I remember correctly.  Well, I don't have children, so I'd have no need for checking out children's books.  The librarian tried to pin it on me, and I continued to insist I don't check out kids' books.  She finally gave up and marked it as lost in the system.

2. Do you have a special organizational plan and place for wrapping paper, gift bags, etc., or do you just purchase whatever you need as you give gifts?

Gift wrap organization?  What's that?  I basically put tubes of wrapping paper in a corner in the spare bedroom and keep a small tote with tissue paper and odds and ends.  I never purchase the stuff ahead of time, though.  I buy it as needed.

3. Have you ever been in (first-hand witness) a natural disaster?

No, I can't say that I have.  It's amazing that I've lived in Indiana for 37 years and have never experienced a tornado.  I've been nearby when some have come through and have seen high winds and green-colored sky, but I've never actually been in the middle of one.

4. What's your favorite Barry Manilow song?

Barry who????  Okay, I am sooo kidding.  I do know who Barry Manilow is, but that's only because a long time ago my mom had all his records, which were played a lot at my house in the 70's.  I was a kid.

I didn't actually know the title of my favorite song, but I knew what it sounded like.  So I just went looking for it on YouTube and discovered it is called Weekend in New England.  Oh, my heart, I love that song.  I think it's the melody and the words combined in such a way that just tugs at my heart.  If you need to see Barry perform this, here's the video for your own enjoyment.  You know, I only provide quality entertainment here at the blog...

5. What's the best costume you've ever worn?

I'm going to take a lot of liberty with my answer.  When I turned 7 my parents threw a surprise party for me and invited all my little schoolmate girlfriends.  Although it wasn't a costume, per se, Mom had made me a skirt and bonnet out of a red calico that matched, and she made each of the girls matching bonnets to wear at the party, too.  It was a Holly Hobby theme because I was really into her at the time.

6. Which do you use more often, the dictionary or the thesaurus?

I use the dictionary more.  Usually I'm looking to see if a word means what I think it means.  You know how you use a word for years, and then you go to use it in your blog and aren't even sure if you've been using it correctly?  (Like for question #5 I had to look up "per se")

7. What's your favorite breakfast food?

I love granola.

8. Have you ever purchased anything from an infomercial?

I remember when I got my first credit card after entering college I saw this hair flip tool that would turn your ponytail inside out.  I ordered it and used it about 5 times.  I could never get my hair to look quite right.

9. Have you ever crawled through a window?

It's funny that Lid would ask this question because of my blog post of yesterday about my husband getting locked out of the house.  I don't think I've ever had to crawl through a window.

10. Do you believe in love at first sight?

No, I don't.  Infatuation, yes.  Love, no.

11. How man pairs of jeans do you own?

I own 5 pairs of jeans that I wear.  I have a couple others in my drawer that I've been holding onto for skinny Liz, but I haven't seen her in a long time.  Sure wish she'd come back and wear her jeans already.

12. If someone were going to bake a cake to honor/represent you, what would it be? (Think creatively, like Duff and Crew on "Ace of Cakes.")

I think it would probably be a piano.  That's what I think I'm most known for in church ministry because it's what I've been doing the longest.  I think it would be cool if it had a bar of music floating out and into the air.  Someone recently gave me a gift for playing at their daughter's wedding.  It's a grand piano encased in a crystal cube, and the music is floating out the top of the piano.  It's beautiful.  This is a picture of it.

What Else Could I Say?

The other day Rich was off work, and he was finally going to mow the lawn for the first time this spring. Our mower had died last season, and he had just purchased a rebuilt one and came home to tackle our overgrown lawn.

I was home for lunch, and then I left at 1:15 for an appointment.  When I left he was busily using the blower to clean up all the grass clippings.  I waved goodbye and left.

When I got home at 3:00 with a load of groceries, the yard was all finished, and Rich was relaxing in the living room.  He greeted me with, "When you left, you locked me out of the house.  It's a good thing I know my house."

Oopsy.

"I am sooo sorry!  It's a habit.  I leave the house, and I lock the door.  What did you do?"

He then proceeded to explain that he knew we had a window that he could climb through to get onto the porch.  He also knew we had another bedroom window that wasn't latched, so he climbed through that.

Wouldn't you know, our dog who barks like a maniac at everything that moves outside got quiet and ran to her crate as he was trying to "break into" the house.  It's good to know we can count on her to alert us to strangers who might unlawfully enter our home.  (By the way, all modes of entry have since been secured.)

That would all be fine and good if that were the end of the story.  Oh, but wait.  There's more!

A concerned neighbor happened to be watching Rich during this whole scene, and of course, as any concerned neighbor would do, they called the police.  The police showed up at the house and wanted to see his I.D., which he gladly produced.  He then went on to explain how I locked him out while he was doing yard work, and they laughed and went on their way.

I really was so sorry.  What else could I say?

Memory Monday -Isaiah 12:2

Memory Monday How can it be Monday already?  I guess that's how I feel every week.  My weekends fly by at the speed of light, and then I'm back to the daily grind.

This week's Memory Monday verse for me is found in Isaiah.  It reminds me that the LORD is my salvation.

I tend to look for salvation in everything else... donuts, chocolate, a nap, TV, browsing Facebook, a friend, etc....  Whenever I look for strength (or more like distraction?) in anything other than God, I'm still left with problems and a heap of restlessness, anxiety, and fear.  God is my only true salvation.

"Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for the LORD GOD is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation." ~ Isaiah 12:2 (ESV)

Quotable Sunday - Proverbs

Quotable Sunday I thought I'd link up today with A Daily Dose of Toni for her Quotable Sunday.  I've been reading in the book of Proverbs for my daily quiet time with the Lord this week, and there are so many interesting things that Proverbs addresses concerning the wise and the foolish.  Here are some of the quotes from Proverbs that have stood out to me just from chapters 17 and 18.

Whoever covers an offense seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates close friends. - Prov. 17:9

A rebuke goes deeper into a man of understanding than a hundred blows into a fool. - Prov. 17:10

A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion.  - Prov. 18:2

A fool's lips walk into a fight, and his mouth invites a beating. A fool's mouth is his ruin, and his lips are a snare to his soul. - Prov. 18:6-7

You can't read Proverbs for very long and not be convicted over your pride.  Many of the warnings given about the fool and his behavior are because of his prideful heart.

The fool doesn't cover offenses.  He is highly opinionated and has no room to hear what anyone has to say about a matter.  He is always ready to pick a fight, and the things he speaks will get him into trouble every time.

I don't want any of those foolish things to be said of me.  I need to evaluate how much of my responses fall under the label of "fool", confess them, and humble myself under God's Word.

Have a worship-filled and restful Sunday.

Chat Pack - What's Your Story?

My first order of business today is to send a shout-out to my new readers.  I'm thrilled that you have decided to stick around after the Ultimate Blog Party '10.  I feel so inspired.  I'm getting to know some new blogs, too, and having fun.
If you're new here, I want to explain that every once in awhile I write a Chat Pack post, which I will explain in a moment.  And guess what... I'm answering the Chat Pack question by vlog today.  Honestly, I love this one.

Bet I Can Make You Hungry

Several weeks ago I mentioned that I may just have a love... no, an OBSESSION... for donuts.  You can read that post here.  After reading the donut obsession post that day, my friend Sherry decided to encourage me in my love for donuts by sending me a Hoops & YoYo video about donuts the next day.  You can read that post here.

Not too long after that, Sherry showed up at church with a little gift bag for Yours Truly, and you'll never guess what was in it.

                           Puppet Ministry 005

Are these not the most amazing donuts you have ever seen?  She crocheted them!!  Then she used puffy paint to create sprinkles and chocolate glaze that look real.  The woman is an artist, I tell ya.

I am displaying them on the top of my bookcase.  I thought they were so cute, I just had to share.

Be sure to come back Friday for my vlog when I answer another Chat Pack question.  I think it'll be fun.

Now go forth, and eat donuts!

Random Dozen... Very Random

It's Tuesday night as I write this.  I've been home all day nursing a dizzy head.  The dizzy is gone now, but the effects of the Dramamine linger on.  Feeling a little spacey right now.  As I answer my Random Dozen, I hope my sentences make sense.  Forgive me if there are any typos.

                                           random dozen

1. How do you feel about "Gladiator" sandals, also called "Roman" or "Jesus" sandals? A fashion yea or nay?

I can't say that I love those sandals... or even like them.  I wouldn't want to discourage anyone from wearing them, though.  They just aren't my taste.

2. What is your favorite pizza?

Any kind that my friend Judy makes!!!  She knows how to make pizza like the pizzerias.  I don't care if it's veggie, pepperoni, hamburger or sausage... she makes an awesome pizza.  People at church put in requests for her pizza.  We joke about her doing pizza delivery out of her home.

3. There are plans in the works to sell roughly 1,000 items from Star Trek: The Experience in Las Vegas. This means you could buy Picard's chair for your family room. If not a Star Trek item, what prop, background, set, etc. from what TV or movie would you buy if you could?
[Ex: Hurley's "I Love my Shih tzu" shirt from LOST, the plantation home "Tara" from Gone With the Wind, or Tracy's tambourine from the Partridge Family.]

Every time I've watched the Biggest Loser I've thought about how I'd like to have their gym.  At least, I wouldn't mind having all their equipment.

4. Name a local food or restaurant that your area is famous for.

I guess that would be the South Bend Chocolate Cafe'.  They specialize in chocolate, or did you figure that out already by the title?  They make large and delicious desserts.  I've had cake there before that I couldn't eat all at one sitting.  I had to take the rest home in a box.

5. What is your current favorite snack?

I like Brown Cow cream top yogurt in raspberry or strawberry flavor.  It's so delicious and better than any yogurt out there.  Cream top is the way to go, baby.  It's good for you.

6. Hypothetical: You are required to be a reality show contestant. Which show would you choose based on your probability of success? (You cannot choose "none.")
A. Dancing with the Stars
B. Biggest Loser
C. Survivor

This is a hard question for me.  I don't believe I would fare well at any of these reality shows.  Since Lid won't let me off without answering, I'll have to pick Biggest Loser.  I cannot see myself capable of learning dances or even being flexible enough to do what all they do.  Survivor?  Forget about it!  I don't like dirt, bugs, reptiles or going more than one day without a shower.  I also enjoy food and running water...oh, and toilets.  I'd never survive!

7. On a scale of 1-10, with 1 being uninhabitable and 10 being cleanliness that meets the standards of OCD, how clean is your vehicle's interior?

I'd say my vehicle is a 7 on the cleanliness scale.  The dash is dusty, there's some pet hair on the seats, and the floors need to be vacuumed.

8. It doesn't feel like Spring until _________.

It doesn't feel like spring until the kids are playing at the park where I take my walks.  It makes me happy when everyone returns.  Life at the park makes me happy.

9. Something that made you laugh really hard recently is ____.

I can't remember the last time I laughed really hard.  I did get seriously tickled the other day during the Ultimate Blog Party when I visited A Daily Dose of Toni's blog and saw her dancing in a vlog.  The woman seems to have no qualms about being crazy for people, and I think it's hilarious.

10. Tell me about a goal you're working toward.

A goal?  What's that?  Okay, I'm so kidding.  I have a goal to read every day, particularly non-fiction.  I've even got an Excel sheet that I fill out with how many pages I read each month and am adding it up for the year.  It helps me have an idea of the progress I'm making.  I can't say I'm doing very well with my goal these days.  I do read, but not as avidly as I want to or probably should.

11. Share a thought-provoking or inspiring quote this week.

I was re-reading a chapter from Sacred Marriage today and came across this quote again.  It is very thought provoking to me.

Most of us, in fact, probably never approached the relationship of marriage with the thought that "apathy" is the antithesis of Christian love.  As long as we're not mean, vindictive, or cruel, we may think we're fulfilling our Christian duty.  But we're not. The truth is, I owe my wife this "gift of self."  When I refuse to fall forward and begin withholding myself, I am saying in effect, "I will no longer be married to you on a spiritual level."  (Sacred Marriage, Gary Thomas, pg. 161)

12. Name one thing that you do as a parent that you absolutely know will make your kids happy. If you're not a parent, feel free to substitute "friend" or nomenclature that works for you.

I don't have kids, so I'll answer this as it pertains to a friend.  I know that if I say I'll ride in Judy's Jeep, she is very happy.  The Jeep is fun, but if you have a lot of hair that's a bit unruly and you don't come prepared to keep it restrained in some fashion, riding in a Jeep with the top off and the wind blowing like crazy can make for a bad hair day.  I just like to be prepared.

If you'd enjoy meeting Linda at 2nd Cup of Coffee, go on over to her blog now and say hello.  Link up with the other Random Dozen-ers.

Not For Lack of Desire

It's funny that I'm sitting here staring at a blank page in my Windows Live Writer and have no idea what to say.  Blog hopping at the Ultimate Blog Party has me feeling inspired to write more often.  I thought maybe my words would come more easily now, but alas, here I sit.  The page is still blank.  Okay, it's not blank anymore because I just wrote those last four sentences.

So while I'm thinking of something to say, I guess this is as good a time as any to give you a heads up about my Friday post.  I've got another Chat Pack entry coming your way, and I answer the question by vlog.  I'll be telling a story from my childhood, so it should be fun.

Anyways, back to blog ideas.  I thought maybe I could join ohamanda for her Top Ten Tuesday today, but I couldn't come up with any kind of list that included ten things.  Ideas that were swarming around in my head were:

1.  Top Ten Things I Did Today (I didn't think you'd really care to know that I folded 3 baskets of laundry and cooked dinner.)

2.  Top Ten Places That My Cat Has Puked Since Last Week (ummm yeah... that's real blog worthy stuff right there)

3.  Top Ten Favorite New Blogs I Found During The Ultimate Blog Party (I'm not quite ready to put that list together, but I think a link-love post will be forthcoming.)

4.  Top Ten Ideas For A Top Ten Post (Yeah, see the problem is that I haven't come up with 10 ideas yet, so that's a no-go.)

Okay, so I'm scrapping the Top Ten idea.

And since nothing else is coming to me right now, I'm just going to wrap this up and call it a post.

Better come back tomorrow.  Please?

Memory Monday: Romans 8:31-32

This week I will be focusing on memorizing Romans 8:31-32.  Verse 32 is for my First Place study, but I want to include verse 31 as well.  I need to be reminded that God is FOR me and gives me everything I need in Christ and because of Christ.

I've felt much adversity in trials for the last few months, and they seem to keep piling up.  My tendency has been to start asking God why.  This scripture reminds me that He demonstrated His love for me when He gave His Son to die for my sin.  If that was the most extreme gift, how can I not believe that He will give me everything else I need to handle life's troubles?

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?  Romans 8:31-32 (NKJV)

Have a good Monday.

How I Spend Sundays

j0409495 Good Sunday morning to you.  Tell me, where did the past week go?  It was a challenging week for me, both emotionally and physically, but ironically, it seemed to fly by.

I'll be at church today.  I'm currently teaching both the primaries and juniors Sunday school, since we lost the primaries' teacher a few weeks ago.  Until someone steps in as the new teacher, I'll be teaching a combined class.  As if 4th-6th graders weren't challenging enough, now I'm adding 1st-3rd graders into the mix.  {Please give me patience, Lord.}

I always take a Sunday afternoon nap.  Does anyone else do that?  It started back when I was a kid, and I just never quit taking Sunday naps.  Sundays are a long day for me anyway with early choir practice, Sunday School, morning service, an afternoon choir practice, and evening service.  You can see why a girl might need her Sunday nap, can't you?

Well, whatever you're doing today, I hope that you have spent time with the Lord and His people.

Have a wonderful Lord's day.

Still Partyin'?

Wow!  That Ultimate Blog Party thing is still going on.  I made the rounds to several blogs yesterday, but I have plenty more to see.  Can you believe there are already over 1,000 blogs linked up just under the family-friendly category?  I'm excited that I've already found some nice blogs to subscribe to.  I even found a blogger who dances in her vlogs.  Gotta love it!

So, it's Saturday.  I'll start my day off by attending my First Place Bible study at 8:00 AM.  That's a weight-loss group, in case you were wondering.  Yeah, I've been working on the same 5 pounds for the last 2 years.  And yes, they make us get up that early on Saturday.  Can you imagine?  Actually, I'm quite used to it by now.  I get up the rest of the week at 5:45 AM.  What's one more day?  I hardly know what sleeping in is.

After Bible study I'm going to a nursing home.  The teens at our church have started a puppet ministry, and they are taking it over to the nursing home.  This will be the second time they've done it, and the residents really seemed to enjoy it the last time.  I don't have a part.  I guess I'm basically a cheerleader for the team, and that's fine with me.

Speaking of teens... guess who's going back to camp this summer.  That would be me.  But we'll talk about that another day.

Have a good Saturday...

Ultimate Blog Party, Anyone?

Ultimate Blog Party 2010

So who's doing the Ultimate Blog Party starting tomorrow?  Anybody I know?

I had heard of it last year, but I've never participated.  I'm thinking.... sure would be cool to see some new people around here and to find some new bloggers out there.

So I think I've gotta run.  I need to go produce a vlog for the big event.  I wonder what I should wear?   Maybe I should brush my hair.

If you want to participate, you should go to 5MINUTESFORMOM.COM for all the info.  FYI... you don't have to be a mom to participate.

Words to Live By

I was searching at my favorite Bible tool site the other day for verses dealing with the tongue.  There are many found in Proverbs, but sometimes I just don't quite get the gist of what the proverb is stating.  The language doesn't always make sense to me.

I found some interesting verses in Proverbs 18 and decided to click on the option for comparing other translations.  Although The Message is not a version I use, I must say that reading through the passage made the truths crystal clear.  Some of the verses almost seemed humorous to me.  Check out a few of my favorites...

1 Loners who care only for themselves spit on the common good.

2 Fools care nothing for thoughtful discourse; all they do is run off at the mouth.

4 Many words rush along like rivers in flood, but deep wisdom flows up from artesian springs.

6 The words of a fool start fights; do him a favor and gag him.

7 Fools are undone by their big mouths; their souls are crushed by their words.

8 Listening to gossip is like eating cheap candy; do you really want junk like that in your belly?

13 Answering before listening is both stupid and rude.

17 The first speech in a court case is always convincing - until the cross-examination starts!

21 Words kill, words give life; they're either poison or fruit - you choose.

24 Friends come and friends go, but a true friend sticks by you like family.
