Memory Monday: Romans 11:36

Memory Monday

Visit Joanne at The Simple Wife for more Memory Monday.

It's surprising I don't have this verse memorized yet.  It's familiar, just not memorized.  I chose it this week because I need to remember the Source of absolutely everything and where the glory belongs.  It's all due the Lord!

For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen. ~ Romans 11:36

Memory Monday: Psalm 119:71

memory monday

Memory Monday is a weekly meme hosted by Joanne of The Simple Wife.

I came across this verse the other day and decided it would be a great one to memorize this week, in light of what the Lord has been teaching me lately.  Actually, there are lots of wonderful treasures to be memorized in Psalm 119.

It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I may learn Your statutes. ~ Psalm 119:71 (NKJV)

Memory Monday: Psalm 62:5-6

For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. ~ Psalm 62:5-6 (ESV)

memory monday Lately, my world as I know it has been turned upside down.  My natural response is to get rattled and anxious.  I really do want to practice dwelling in God's presence because I don't enjoy feeling like such a mess.

I'm choosing this memory verse for the week because it's a reminder for me that trusting in God is waiting on Him alone.  Hoping in Him alone.  Making Him alone my rock and my salvation.  When I do, I will not be shaken.

Memory Monday: Zephaniah 3:17

It's the start of a new week and time to put another verse to memory.

The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing. ~ Zephaniah 3:17 (ESV)

I like every portion of the verse.  It lifts my spirit to meditate on it.memory monday

  • God is in your midst (He's near).
  • He's mighty!
  • He rejoices over me.
  • He quiets me.
  • He exults over me.
  • He exults over me with singing.
  • He exults over me with LOUD singing!

I just love the fact that God sings over me.  It makes me want to sing to Him.

Memory Monday: Ephesians 2:10

My memory verse this week is Ephesians 2:10.  It follows up that very familiar scripture that says we are saved by grace, and our salvation is not a product of our own works but rather a gift given to us from God.

Verse 10 goes on to tell us that we have been created in Christ to do good works.  Did you know that we weren't saved just to go to Heaven, but truly to do the work that God has prepared for us?  memory monday

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. ~ Ephesians 2:10 (ESV)

What are you memorizing this week?

Memory Monday: Hebrews 4:14-16

When you have an interruption in routine, it's sometimes hard to get it back.  I'm still trying.  Slowly but surely I'm getting back to implementing all the important daily things that are of benefit to me -- exercise, study, and scripture memory.

14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. ~ Hebrews 4:14-16 (NKJV)

memory mondayThis week the memory verse for First Place is Hebrews 4:16, but I feel like I need to connect the previous verses to complete the thought.  In my Word of Life daily quiet time in June I had been reading through Hebrews, and I really appreciated all that it spoke about both Christ's deity and humanity.

The Savior is so beautiful to me in that He -- God -- left Heaven and came to live in a flesh and blood body.  He experienced the weakness of my flesh, yet experienced it without committing sin.  This section of scripture speaks to me of a wonderful truth.  He is my perfect and great High Priest who intercedes for me to His Father, knowing exactly what I need because He knows what I feel.  He knows my weaknesses.  He knows my pain.  He knows my suffering.

If Christ knows my experience full well, then He knows exactly what to ask the Father to provide for me.  He beckons me to come boldly to His throne, and it's a throne of grace.  Not a throne of reproach.  I obtain mercy there, not beratement.

I want to approach Him boldly.  Don't you?

Memory Monday: Isaiah 41:13

When I think of the things I lack in my flesh to obey and accomplish what God would have me to do, two very necessary elements come to mind. Strength and courage.

But I am so weak. I'm weak physically, spiritually, mentally and emotionally. Oh, sometimes I like to imagine that I'm strong, but I'm not. I'm helpless in and of myself. Do you know how many times I start a prayer by saying, "God, I need you"?

And courage? I've had people tell me they believed me to be so self-confident and able to do anything I set my mind to. If only they knew how fearful I am. I mean, fearful of things that some people would find to be ho-hum, no big deal.

So if strength and courage are not within me, then I'm going to have to find them somewhere else. It's a good thing I know God. He said He would supply those things for me because He is my God. My memory verse for the week speaks of His provision for strength and courage.

For I am the LORD your God, who upholds your right hand, Who says to you, 'Do not fear, I will help you.'

~ Isaiah 41:13 (NASB)

Memory Monday: Colossians 3:1-2

Memory Monday My memory verse for the week is one I need to memorize for First Place.  It's a familiar scripture to me, but it's a good one to have committed to memory.

It reminds me where my focus should be -- Heaven.  That's where my Savior is and where I'll be someday soon (because He's coming soon).  Life is not about this world.  It's about the one to come.

If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. ~ Colossians 3:1-2 (NKJV)

Memory Monday: Hebrews 3:12-13

Last week I missed Memory Monday, only because I didn't have time to write a Monday post.  That doesn't mean I wasn't memorizing scripture.  In fact, I really kicked it into high gear.

I decided to go back to Psalm 63 and finish memorizing the chapter.  I had stopped a couple months ago somewhere around verse 7.  I was able to commit the rest of the chapter to memory, and now it's in my scripture review box.

I've chosen this week's scripture to remind me that unbelief is rebellion against God, and that there is a danger in the hardening of my heart.  Just as the Israelites were unable to enter into the Promised Land because of their unbelief, so am I unable to receive God's blessing, promises and help when I have unbelief and harden my heart in pride.

Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; but exhort one another daily, while it is called "Today," lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.  ~Hebrews 3:12-13 (NKJV)

Memory Monday: Romans 6:4

Sorry I'm a day late with my Memory Monday, but blogging didn't fit into my Monday.  This week we start a new First Place session focusing on being a new creation.  The memory verse for the week is about walking in the new life we have in Christ.

Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. ~ Romans 6:4 (NKJV)

Memory Monday - 2 Corinthians 4:17-18

Memory Monday I came across a verse this morning in my quiet time that struck a chord with me.  It's in a passage that I'm familiar with, both having been counseled by it and counseling other people with it.

The reason it really hit me today is because it deals with affliction and looking beyond my temporary circumstances.  I've been afflicted for some time in a particularly hard circumstance, as well as some other various circumstances in my relationships and church ministry.

Affliction hurts, and it doesn't feel light.  But the apostle Paul calls affliction "light" when viewed through eternity.  He exhorts us to look ahead to the future glory and not focus on these temporary circumstances because they are just that.  Temporary.  That's hard.

I need God to renew my mind with the truth of His Word, so I guess that's why I'm choosing these scriptures to memorize this week.  In all honesty, I'd rather memorize something else...something easier to soak up.  But I need this.

For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal. ~ 2 Corinthians 4:17-18

Memory Monday -Isaiah 12:2

Memory Monday How can it be Monday already?  I guess that's how I feel every week.  My weekends fly by at the speed of light, and then I'm back to the daily grind.

This week's Memory Monday verse for me is found in Isaiah.  It reminds me that the LORD is my salvation.

I tend to look for salvation in everything else... donuts, chocolate, a nap, TV, browsing Facebook, a friend, etc....  Whenever I look for strength (or more like distraction?) in anything other than God, I'm still left with problems and a heap of restlessness, anxiety, and fear.  God is my only true salvation.

"Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for the LORD GOD is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation." ~ Isaiah 12:2 (ESV)

Memory Monday: Romans 8:31-32

This week I will be focusing on memorizing Romans 8:31-32.  Verse 32 is for my First Place study, but I want to include verse 31 as well.  I need to be reminded that God is FOR me and gives me everything I need in Christ and because of Christ.

I've felt much adversity in trials for the last few months, and they seem to keep piling up.  My tendency has been to start asking God why.  This scripture reminds me that He demonstrated His love for me when He gave His Son to die for my sin.  If that was the most extreme gift, how can I not believe that He will give me everything else I need to handle life's troubles?

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?  Romans 8:31-32 (NKJV)

Have a good Monday.

Memory Monday: Psalm 18:28

I know this is called Memory MONDAY, but I still wanted to post this week's memory verse, even though I'm very late.  To be honest, I didn't exactly feel like posting a verse earlier in the week, but I definitely NEED a verse to memorize and meditate on this week.

I've chosen the verse that is part of my First Place Bible study this week.  It speaks of the only source of light in my darkest days, and that's where I am right now...very dark days.  I've found it hard to see God in the darkness the last few weeks.  It's truly grown darker and darker for me.  But I'm finding that the light is always there, when I choose to dwell in His presence.

For it is you who light my lamp; the LORD my God lightens my darkness. ~ Psalm 18:28

Memory Monday: Psalm 92:1-2

I wanted to move my focus back to gratitude this week, so I looked for a verse to memorize that speaks of thankfulness.  I like this one.  It simply states that it is good to thank the Lord.

I believe that it is good to continually look for things to thank the Lord for, and we should speak those praises out loud in the hearing of others.  It gives us proper perspective and sets our minds to thinking right and true thoughts.  His lovingkindness (His mercy or steadfast love) toward us is reason enough to thank Him.

It is good to give thanks to the Lord, and to sing praises to Your name, O Most High; to declare Your lovingkindness in the morning, and Your faithfulness every night," ~ Psalm 92:1-2 (NKJV)

Memory Monday: Psalm 9:9-10

Are you working on memorizing Scripture?  I have become more intentional about it since January, but it's something I have to be truly disciplined about or it will fall by the wayside.

Today I came across a new blog to me, The Simple Wife, and she posts Scripture on Mondays that she intends to memorize through the week.  I would enjoy sharing my Scriptures with you, so I thought I might participate with her.

I especially need these verses right now because I need a refuge in the time of trouble I'm experiencing.  They remind me that God is my only refuge, not people.  And I will more quickly trust Him if I have sought Him and know His character.

The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, A refuge in times of trouble.

And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; For You, LORD, have not forsaken those who seek You.

Psalm 9:9-10 (NKJV)

Brushing Up on Scripture Memorization

Having grown up attending Christian school and church, I've memorized much scripture. The problem is I know a verse here and there but not entire passages. I also must confess that I've let much of my memory verses go, having forgotten them long ago. I know that memorization is important because Psalm 119 says hiding God's Word in our hearts will keep us from sin.

So this year God has impressed upon me the value of scripture memorization, partly due to John Piper's book When I Don't Desire God. He teaches many ways to use God's Word in our fight for joy, and memorization is one of them. He cites another book that gave him a systematic way to memorize entire passages, An Approach to the Extended Memorization of Scripture by Andrew Davis. I started using his memory method, and it has been the most beneficial system I've ever tried. I've never had much difficulty memorizing, but this has been even more effective for me, especially as it pertains to whole chapters and then some. I want to share it with you, in case you might find it helpful. I'll explain it here, but you can also go to the website and read the book. You'll find this information on page 117 of the pdf file in Chapter 8.

The basic plan is to read a verse with the reference 10 times, then recite the verse 10 times. The next day you recite that same verse. Then you read the next verse 10 times and recite it 10 times. The following day you recite both verses. Then you read the new verse 10 times and recite it 10 times. You just keep adding a verse a day and recite all the previous days' verses together.

I've personally been working on the entire chapter of Romans 8. Today I am through verse 31. It just blew my mind this morning when I realized I have memorized 31 verses. THIRTY-ONE! Mind you, I don't have all of them perfect yet, but it will come. It is okay to look at the verse when you hit a snag. Eventually, it comes.

I believe it's biblical to pray over your memory work. Ask the Lord to use His Word to work whatever He wants to accomplish in your life. It's amazing the new meat you will find as you meditate on His Word in this manner. You'll see things that you haven't seen before, and then when you are sitting under preaching and teaching, you'll find many things that relate back to that memorized passage.
