Caffeinated Randomness - Comfort Zone

Snapshot_20090529 Please don't laugh when I tell you this, but I'm having lunch alone at Starbucks today.  Alone!  I never, ever, EVER have gone to a restaurant alone.  I always thought I would be completely self-conscious to eat alone, thinking everyone else who came to eat in pairs would be looking at me.

I guess that's a little egotistical, huh?

I've been wanting to come here ever since I got my laptop, and that was over a year ago.  Whoa, I guess it's about time.  The reason it worked out today is because I'm waiting to meet a friend who had a lunch appointment and is meeting me afterwards.  I didn't want to drive home just to eat lunch and meet up later, so I thought, Hey!  This is a great day to go grab a sandwich at Starbucks and write away at your blog, girl.

And so I agreed to the little voice in my head.

So as I sit here at my table, typing away at my laptop, I am okay.  Very much okay.  Nobody is staring.  {Not that I've noticed, but I've been pretty much looking at my sandwich, iced tea, and computer screen.}

Finally, another bridge crossed.  A victory in getting out of that old comfort zone.  I think I'll be doing this again.Randomness Friday

She Did It Again!

Dear Ms. Barista,

You just don't seem to get it, do you?  When I order a non-fat raspberry mocha with whip, all I want is a non-fat raspberry mocha with whip.  And please don't tell me how much it smells like chocolate covered cherries.  It doesn't!  It can't because the perfume you left behind on my cup lid is overwhelming my nostrils.

You were doing so well, too.  What happened?

It seems I may need to take my business elsewhere if you keep this up.  At more than $3.00 a cup, I just can't afford to not enjoy my mocha.

Regretfully,

Liz

A Letter

Dear Starbucks Barista,

I'd like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for refraining from dousing yourself with your favorite eau de parfum this morning.  It must have been a truly difficult sacrifice to make for your customers in that it's your favorite scent and you enjoy it immeasurably, so I thought I should let you know that it made a difference in my life today.

You see, I have been unable to enjoy my very special Peppermint Mocha Twist to the fullest degree because of your perfume.  The flavor of my beverage and the scent of your perfume do not mix well, practically gagging, and your scent was all that filled my nostrils as I sipped on my cup of mocha.  Can you imagine the tragedy that has come to my frigid, winter mornings in being unable to partake of the warm creaminess of my beloved drink?  Not to mention the parting with my $3.65 for the smallest of comforts?

Granted, the Peppermint Mocha Twist is now off the menu, and I will not enjoy it again until a mere 11 months have passed.  The Raspberry Mocha will do just fine in its stead, though.  Even now, I am enjoying the raspberry goodness, free of floral notes wafting from my cup.

So I just wanted to say thank you.

Your Ever-Grateful Patron,

Liz

A Love Affair Revisited...Again

*This was originally posted on Nov. 9, 2007, but I think it's worth a reprint.

Hoo, buddy! Did I have a special surprise this morning. Everything happened as any other typical day in my life this morning. I managed to get out the door a little early in order to go grab a Starbucks as I headed to the church. I had raspberry mocha on my brain... nonfat, of course.

But as I entered the store and rounded the corner I saw that everything had changed. My eyes were met by an array of red and green. YES!!!! The Starbucks menu has changed for Christmas! You may think, "What's the big deal?" But to me, suddenly all was right with the world at that moment. I can now order a Peppermint Mocha at the special price. It's on the menu! Sure, I could order that year-round, but I've been saving it up for the Christmas season because it's all part of the holiday experience. Once January rolls out of here, I will refrain from ordering until next year. So I'm savoring the beauty of this day as it marks the first Peppermint Mocha of Starbucksthe season, and I have included a picture of this momentous occasion.

I adore the Peppermint Mocha. There is nothing else like it in the whole world. It is a tantalizing, perfect blend of chocolate and peppermint mingled together to create a beverage like none other. (sigh) I need a moment.....

Okay.

I first fell in love with this Starbucks creation last Christmas season. I happened to stop over at some friends' house, and they were headed out to have some coffee. So I tagged along, and they introduced me to the phenomenon that is Starbucks. I had never been. It wasn't a real high priority on my list, and I wasn't even sure I would like it. I am very picky about my coffee, and I have never liked flavored coffees. Well, since we were there, I figured, "I've got to fit in. I better order something and choke it down just to be sociable." I chose Peppermint Mocha because a friend had mentioned that it was really, really good, so I figured it sounded like it might be okay. I got my mocha and sat down with my friends. I took a drink... it was love at first sip! From that moment on through the entire conversation, it was as if it was just me and my Peppermint Mocha. I don't even remember what we talked about. All I remember was the Mocha.

So that's how it all began. By the way, I got so excited over it this morning that I forgot to order nonfat. Oops!

Starbucks - The Common Bond

Alright you Starbucks fanatics, I really had no idea that you would even find my humble, little blog tucked in among those hundreds of bloggy giveaways. But at last check there are 296 of you out there, and I am reeling, wide-eyed and dumbfounded, from all the attention. I realize you really only love me for my Starbucks, but it's attention just the same. I'm okay with that.

I have enjoyed reading your comments. It appears that I am not alone in my love for the mocha, and I feel the bond we all share no matter what your beverage passion...whether it be tazo tea, coffee, frappuccino, latte, steamer, or my beloved peppermint mocha.

Starbucks... it is the common bond.

It's Been a Full Friday

I thought I would just tell you about my day. It's been a pretty full one, especially as I have marked a very important victory in my life. It's something I would like to share.

First, of course, I worked at the church office this morning until noon. Fridays are "iffy" because it's the day to publish Sunday's bulletin, and you just never know what might hit. It depends on the amount of phone calls that come in, if the pastor (that's Dad to me) gives me a last-minute project, or if there just happens to be a plethera of announcements that need to be put in the bulletin - all of these things factor into how easily Friday mornings will proceed. Today was a pretty easy day, but it became a cruncher there in the last hour. Last-minute things arose, and normally I could just stay a little late in order to complete them. Today, though, I needed to be out the door at noon.

That brings me to the next part of the day. I got to meet a friend for lunch, someone I only see about every couple of months. We have much in common, particularly our fastidious nature of organization. We're pretty much perfectionists, and we enjoy laughing at some of the crazy things that we think "have" to be perfect in our worlds. So we had a fun time catching up this afternoon.

Afterwards I went to Starbucks. Now before you get after me for indulging in my peppermint mocha and feeding my ungodly addiction, I'll have you know that I did some checking at Starbucks.com and found an acceptable beverage to "put on". (You know, the put off-put on principle of the Bible? If you're going to put off an ungodly behavior you need to replace it with a godly behavior. And yes, drinking is a spiritual thing.) I ordered a Short, Non-fat, Vanilla Creme, No whip - a.k.a. steamed milk with flavored syrup. It was the best thing I could find at 100 calories. It does have its flaw of 18g of sugar, but it's a much better choice than the 310 cal. peppermint mocha that has slowly resulted in my demise. So I was an overcomer today. I conquered that Starbucks beast. Woot!

(As a side note, have you heard this word "woot"? I just heard about it the other day on the news... something about how it is a new word that has been added to the dictionary. Its definition is like a victory cry in celebration. Hopefully, I am using it appropriately. I get tired of using the same old words like "cool" and "yay". )

Okay, now back to the rest of my day. I came home and made dinner, which was okay. Nothing spectacular. After that I finished up my First Place Bible study and then decided to run back out to try that Christmas shopping thing again.

This time I knew where to go and what I was getting. I got exactly what I needed, and I was really happy. Woot! (See, there it is again.) I even made an extra stop, and I found another Christmas item I had been looking for. I guess these things need to be done in phases, or so it seems.

So now I've been home and unwinding from the day. I've been reading blogs, but I'm not all caught up yet from all the afternoon posts. I see I have a few comments on mine, and that's always fun to see. Thanks, you guys!

Can't wait for tomorrow morning. It's time once again to attend First Place, and I get to do that weigh-in thing. I've already taken a peek at the scale today, and things are looking good.

That's all for today...
