Books & A Hook (or How I Spent My Weekend)

I took advantage of the long weekend to get a lot of reading done, as well as work on a crochet project.  I finished one book to be reviewed and started in on another book just "for fun".  Don't get me wrong.  The books I review are for fun, too, but I have a long list of books I've been marking to-be-read for the last year.  So lots and lots of reading.

And then about that crochet project.  I was able to knock another book off my list while crocheting.  Turns out that my library's website offers a service of e-audiobooks that can be checked out.  I found  The Missing (Seasons of Grace, Book 2)and downloaded it to my computer, then transferred it to my Kindle.  I listened to a 9-hour audiobook while I crocheted.

Spending hours with my yarn and hook, I became very familiar with the narrator's voice on my audiobook, so much so that I kept wanting to get back to my project so I could listen to her.  At first, I wasn't even that thrilled with the story, but it was something to listen to.  Eventually, though, it grew on me.

Monday night I finished the crochet project and the audiobook.  I'm sure gonna miss my little reader gal, though.  She has such a pleasant voice.

So do you know what I'm doing now?  I'm looking for more yarn to start a new project.  And guess what the library has... the third installment of that Amish series on e-audiobook just waiting to be checked out.

Memory Monday: Romans 11:36

Memory Monday

Visit Joanne at The Simple Wife for more Memory Monday.

It's surprising I don't have this verse memorized yet.  It's familiar, just not memorized.  I chose it this week because I need to remember the Source of absolutely everything and where the glory belongs.  It's all due the Lord!

For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen. ~ Romans 11:36

Favorite Sunday Dinner

Friday Feedback

Today Rachel at A Steady Rain is asking this feedback question...

What is your favorite Sunday dinner meal or recipe?

Since my husband works days on Sundays, I am always on my own for Sunday dinner, except for the carry-in dinner our church hosts once a month.  I do often go out with friends, but otherwise I will stop and pick up a sandwich from Subway because it's the healthiest choice of any fast food.  There's no way I'm cooking for one.

If I do go out to a sit-down restaurant, I love Chinese most of all.  There is a Chinese buffet that is a local favorite, and I enjoy eating there.

My favorites are Crab Rangoon, an Egg Roll, General Tso's Chicken, Mongolian Pork, and I love me a big spoonful of steamed rice.  Since I'm trying to watch the carbs and calories these days, I tend to stay away from the breaded stuff as much as I can, and, of course, take a smaller spoonful of rice.

Oh, and I forgot to mention the Almond Cookies.  Haven't had one in a long time because, again, they have calories. {sigh}  But oh, the buttery almond goodness of the Almond Cookie.  So delicious.

I do adore Chinese food.  Always have.

Only the Name Has Been Changed

51YXA- vJpL._SL160_ Someone had recommended the book Hinds' Feet on High Places (by Hannah Hurnard) to me several years ago.  I've had it in the back of my mind and thought about it from time to time.

Would you believe I've never read an allegory?  Nope.  Not even Pilgrim's Progress.

I was able to get my hands on a copy last week, and I've been reading it a little at a time.  What a sweet story!

The main character is Much-Afraid, and I can't believe how much I identify with her.  Poor little thing!  She really is a pitiable little gal.  So much like us, hmm?

I'm telling you, this story could've been written about my spiritual life.  It's as if someone has secretly been following me around and observing all my victorious moments and the times I've cried in secret defeat.  Then they wrote it all down in a fairytale-type story (changing my name for privacy's sake, of course).  Although, it's no fairytale.  It's really true to a Christian's daily spiritual walk.

There are so many sweet passages throughout the story.  I wanted to share one quote that particularly spoke to me today.

You may think that Much-Afraid was altogether too much given to shedding tears, but remember that she had Sorrow for a companion and teacher.  There is this to be added, that her tears were all in secret, for no one but her enemies knew about this strange journey on which she had set out.  The heart knoweth its own sorrow and there are times when, like David, it is comforting to think that our tears are put in a bottle and not one of them forgotten by the one who leads us in paths of sorrow.

I just liked that.  I think I'm often ashamed of my tears, but tears are part of the journey.  They make us cling tighter to the Shepherd and long for Him more, don't they?

What's Up With That?

I've seriously been thinking of starting a series on my blog in which I write about things I just don't get.  You know those things that make me say, "Huh?" and scratch my head.  Right now I've got several just floating around in my thoughts that I could talk about.

For instance, I was in the church foyer yesterday and heard a loud knocking coming from the far end of the hallway.  No one else was at the church, so I wondered what could be making the noise.

I walked down the hallway and heard, "Caw caw caw!" and the loud knocking continued.  I reached the classroom at the end of the hall, and there on the windowsill a big, fat crow was perched.  He was knocking loudly on the window with his beak.

I'm not talking about a light tap tapping on the window.  He wanted in!  He pecked at the bottom of the window as if he could somehow pry it open, and he continued to beat on the window with his beak and bark out, "Caw caw caw!"

The crows that hang out at the church are scary. They're big and loud, and for some reason they want in.

What's up with that?!?
